About The Program

The Addiction Program is a non-crisis, community-based service that supports individuals with mental health and addictions. The program offers a variety of services through two streams of support:

Specialized Justice Stream: Offers addiction-specific services to individuals living with mental health and substance use who are also involved in the justice system. The specialized justice stream recognizes the unique barriers that individuals who are justice involved face in accessing support for their mental health and addiction needs. This stream offers specialized addictions support which can include:

short-term addictions goal orientated support
access to addiction specific groups
access to individualized structured therapy
access to free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) through the STOP program
harm reduction supplies and support
help with referrals to addictions treatment

Generic Stream: Offers addiction-specific services to individuals living with mental health and substance use who want support with their substance use. This stream offers addictions support which can include:

access to addiction specific groups
access to free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) through the STOP program
harm reduction supplies and support

Groups that are available for both Generic Stream and Specialized Justice Stream (Please go to referral form for details of each group):

Cannabis Group (12-week virtual group)
Addictions Group using DBT skills (12-week virtual group)
Relapse prevention Group (4-6 week virtual group)
DBT Skills Group (12-week virtual group)
Anger management Group (12-week virtual group)
CBT anxiety and depression Group (12-week virtual group)
Alcohol Group using CBT skills (12-week virtual group)

Individuals 18+ who want support with their substance use, and who may be involved in the justice system

How IT Works

The client completes the referral form below.
Self-referrals are accepted, as well as referrals from mental health and addiction community agencies, hospitals and primary care providers. For the specialized justice stream, you must be involved in the justice system.
After a referral form is submitted, the client will be contacted when a spot becomes available (wait time are from 1 week to a month).

Following services are open for referrals: *

STOP Smoking/ Vaping - Nicotine Replacement Therapy Program
A partnership with CAMH’s STOP Program which provides free patches, lozenges, gum and/or inhalers for a 26 weeks dispensing period - in order to help individuals make changes to their smoking habits. To make referral without attending the Smoke Stoppers group, please fill out this form and a CD Specialist will be in touch to complete an intake
Individual Addictions Support
Addictions staff work with individuals for up to three months on goals related to managing their substance use including addictions counselling, help access residential treatment or other community addiction services and identifying addiction recovery goals. This is goal oriented support and requires a commitment to change substance use behaviour on the continuum of recovery. Once we receive your referral you will be placed on the wait-list and contacted once a spots becomes available (approximately 1 month)
Relapse Prevention Group (Virtual)

We are accepting referrals for Fall 2026. This is a weekly, virtual group, held on Fridays 12-1:00pm for 4 weeks.
This group supports individuals to achieve and maintain their substance use and recovery goals. Individuals are provided with tools to identify the cues and triggers that contribute to relapse; as well as the coping strategies they can use to manage cravings and withdrawal. At the end of the group, individuals go home with a personalized relapse prevention plan. This group supports individuals whose goals are abstinence as well as harm reduction.
Anger Management Group (Virtual)

We are accepting referrals for Fall 2026 group. This is a weekly, virtual group, held on Wednesdays from 1:00pm to 2:30pm for 12 weeks.
This group is for individuals who want to work towards managing their anger.
This groups provides participants with a summary of core concepts and helps them develop skills that are necessary to successfully manage their anger.
Alcohol Group: CBT Skills (Virtual)

We are accepting referrals for our Fall 2026 group. This is a weekly, virtual group, held on Fridays from 11:00 to 1:00pm for 12 weeks.
This group is for individuals who want to take steps towards reducing or stopping their alcohol use. This group is structured, using principles of CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). This group provides psychoeducation as well as tools and strategies to help individuals with their alcohol use for the long term.
Addiction Group for DBT Skills (Virtual)

We are accepting referrals for our Fall 2026 group. This group runs weekly on Thursdays from 11:00am to 1:00pm for 12 weeks.
This group is for individuals looking for support with impulsivity with substance use, managing intense emotions, relationship difficulties, relapse prevention planning. This is a goal oriented group and requires a commitment to change substance use behaviour on the continuum of recovery. This group has an attendance policy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How are the services offered?

We offer virtual groups. Some addiction services are also offered in the community, in clients’ homes and in CHMA Toronto offices.

What are the service hours?

CMHA Toronto’s addiction supports are available from Monday–Friday from 9 am–5 pm.

Who provides addictions support?

Our team consists of addictions specialists (concurrent disorders specialists), and an addictions nurse case manager.

Do you need a referral from a psychiatrist or a family doctor to access support?

No, you do not need a referral from a family doctor or a psychiatrist.

Can I refer myself to these services?

Yes, self-referrals are accepted. Referrals from mental health and addiction community agencies, hospitals and primary care providers are also accepted. For the specialized justice stream you must be involved in the justice system.

Do you offer family support?

We have a family clinician who can provide family support. This is accessed through the Family Outreach and Response (FOR) referral form.

How do I access the Addiction Program?

You will need to complete a referral form located above.

Self-referrals are accepted, as well as referrals from mental health and addiction community agencies, hospitals and primary care providers.

For One on One services, you must be involved in the justice system.
