Why Connection Feels So Hard Right Now: How to Feel Less Alone with Others

Even when we’re surrounded by people — at work, at home, or in our communities — it’s still possible to feel disconnected or lonely. Conversations may stay surface-level, relationships can feel one-sided, or it might feel risky to name what you need without worrying how it will be received.

As part of Mental Health Week 2026 and this year’s theme, Come Together, Toronto, this workshop invites us to slow down and take a closer look at what real connection actually feels like. Not just being around others, but feeling seen, respected, and able to show up as yourself.

Together, we’ll have honest conversations about what gets in the way of connection – burnout, stress, past hurt, miscommunication – and explore small, realistic ways to build relationships that feel more mutual, steady, and authentic. In a city as busy and diverse as Toronto, this is a chance to pause and reflect on how we can genuinely come together, both with others and with ourselves.

By the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Better understand why meaningful connection matters so much for mental health, especially during overwhelming or uncertain times.
  • Be able to identify what actually makes a relationship feel supportive, balanced, and sustainable.
  • Recognize common real-life barriers to connection, including stress, conflict, emotional exhaustion, and past experiences.
  • Leave with practical tools to communicate needs, set boundaries, and repair or strengthen relationships when things feel off.
