Countdown to The Push-Up Challenge

Have you or has someone you love struggled with a mental illness? It’s time to push back against the misunderstandings and stigma that still surround mental illness and push up for better mental health!

In February 2024, CMHA Toronto is excited to participate in a new, national campaign that encourages people to push for better mental health. The Push-Up Challenge is a fitness-based mental health initiative that will engage Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life to learn, get fit, and fundraise for CMHAs across Canada.

Founded in Australia in 2017, The Push-Up Challenge has grown to become Australia’s largest mental health and fitness event, with over 500,000 participants completing 900 million push-ups and raising over $36 million for mental health.

This year, it’s coming to Canada, thanks to the national Canadian Mental Health Association and with the participation of CMHA branches across the country.

“We’re really excited to be involved in the inaugural year of The Push-Up Challenge,” said Sarah Ernest, CMHA Toronto’s Chief Philanthropy Officer. “By rallying people across Toronto to join in this fun, educational, community-building event, we hope not only to inspire better physical and mental fitness, but also push back at the stigma around mental health and raise funds to make more resources available to the one in five people who will face a mental illness this year.”

CMHA branches across Canada will be fielding a team and encouraging their supporters to join the challenge and get engaged in building better mental health through connection, physical activity, and education.

What better way to beat the February blahs than by getting active and getting connected to others who share your commitment to better mental health?

Participants of all ages and abilities will take on the challenge of completing 2,000 push-ups, which represents the 20% of Canadians who will suffer from mental illness in any given year.

The number of daily push-ups will change each day to reflect a vital mental health fact, giving people the opportunity to learn more about mental health and break down the many barriers that still exist for people who experience mental illness.

The event begins on February 1st and runs for 23 days. Registration is free and participants are encouraged to raise funds for CMHA Toronto as part of their challenge.

Whatever way people choose to take part, funds raised for CMHA Toronto will go towards accessible, quality care for Toronto residents through programs, research and advocacy. From providing mental health supports and crisis interventions to employment opportunities, affordable housing, and community connections, CMHA Toronto works to create belonging and hope for those affected by mental health and addictions challenges in our community.
